Workshop on Power Quality and System Reliability
Date: Monday 1st March 2010 (9:00 am – 1:00 pm)
Fee: 150 KD
Language: English
Overview:
One of the most essential requirements of continuous process industry is quality of power. On the other hand, it is almost impossible to get power without any disturbance. It is necessary to define some of the important terms to distinguish voltage sag/dip from similar terms used for power disturbances. The IEEE defines power quality indicator which applies in most of the cases, however this studies are done for plants having 1 second bus transfer scheme. Therefore definitions are slightly modified as under to suit the protection scheme and override circuits. The workshop provides an overview of the problems of power quality and its impact on the industry and the power systems. Participants will be exposed to the sources of power quality problem, international standards, and power quality indices. Monitoring and mitigation methods will also be discussed. Finally, a review of recent power blackouts and the implications of deregulation will be presented.
Course Topics:
- Power Quality Definitions and Standards
- Monitoring and Indices Power Blackouts
- Mitigation Techniques
- System Reliability
Participants:
Professional transmission and distribution engineers
Workshop Instructor:
Dr. Ibrahim El-Amin is a Professor of Electrical Engineering at the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals. He received his Ph.D. and M.Sc degrees from the University of Manchester in 1978 and 1975, respectively, in electrical engineering with a specialization in power systems. He obtained his B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Khartoum, Sudan, in 1971. His research interests include power systems, DC transmission, power electronics, and the integration of alternative energy sources into power networks. Dr. El-Amin is actively involved in research with more than 90 refereed journal and conference publications/presentations and co-authored one book chapter.
Dr. El-Amin is the principal investigator of many research projects of in the area of power systems, power quality and renewable energy. He is currently leading the team that is developing the long-term electricity plan for Saudi Arabia. Dr. El-Amin is also the principal investigator of the project “Novel Tracking and Mitigation Strategies for Power Quality and Reliability Improvement in Electric Networks.
